Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Sulligent, Alabama. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with centers nationwide equipped for the task. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is generally needed. Tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options tailored to your needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle tests for drug detection has increased. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, along with courts and probationers, opt for hair tests due to their extended detection window—up to 90 days. Though urine tests excel for recent drug use within 5 days, hair tests are nearly tamper-proof.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-lasting record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide up to a roughly three-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the lab processing of a drug testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug use on most samples, any positive result must be verified to be permissible in legal proceedings. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a positive indication in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to rig: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, making the results more dependable.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a trend of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
