Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Talladega Springs, Alabama. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct your test. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is needed. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing protocols have increasingly adopted the hair follicle method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine method. This testing is favored by workplaces with no-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its longer detection period, spanning up to 90 days, with monitored collection and near-impossible cheating aspects. Yet, for detecting recent 5-day drug use, urine testing remains unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a valuable method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair serves as a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, containing around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil’s thickness), taken nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels beyond 10, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only the scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any remaining data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that appear positive during Screening will need further verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, more hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used to confirm any positive screening outcomes. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: Displays a pattern of drug usage over time rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
