Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Union, Alabama. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities nationwide to accommodate these needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is used. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent years, the preference for conducting drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair drug testing over standard urine tests. This method is adopted by employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is its longer detection period, lasting up to 90 days; it is collected under observation and is very difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have gained recognition as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When extracted from close to the scalp, hair samples can indicate drug and alcohol presence over roughly a 3-month span. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and shipment is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands, akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil, nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen measurement. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result is divided into four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning means the sample's initial integration into a lab's system. It encompasses confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any lacking data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift initial test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use on most samples, confirmation of a positive screening is necessary for court admissibility. Samples testing positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the starting specimen for preparation for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any screen-positive result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments uncover drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests detect for a briefer duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably tough to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows historical usage: Allows for tracking drug use patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Union, AL, hair follicle tests offer distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. While urine tests only detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader detection window, capturing substance use history over months. This longer detection period is a decisive factor for employers enforcing strict drug policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
