Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Warrior, Alabama. Specializing in this type of testing, our centers are available nationwide. You need to have approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body for testing. The hair can be examined for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent years, using hair follicle tests for drug detection has become increasingly common. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests as opposed to the usual urine tests. These tests are favored by those with strict anti-drug policies. The major advantage is the extended detection range, generally up to 90 days. Hair sample collection is observed, and the test is virtually foolproof. However, to identify drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent method for identifying alcohol and drug use, hair testing offers a thorough timeline by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, it provides up to a 3-month detection span for substances like alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

When obtaining a specimen, a 1.5-inch segment from approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair is permissible. "Head hair" exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for evaluating a drug test sample consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into the lab's system. This process entails verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and economical method to identify potential drug use in most samples. To ensure the results are legally valid, any positive screening outcome must undergo further confirmation. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, hair is further extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, drugs are drawn from the hair at much lower levels compared to other methodologies such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples classified as presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The oversight of the entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: The test's accuracy is heightened due to the difficulty of cheating a hair drug test.
  • Chronic usage data: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drug presence in hair is typically detectable after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," these tests assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
