Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Winterboro, Alabama. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing operates testing centers nationwide where hair testing can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body are required. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other custom testing solutions.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly emphasized hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are turning to hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. These are particularly favored by employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process making them difficult to tamper. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection range of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp, will offer 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It is advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory encompasses four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into the laboratory's system. This involves ensuring the sample was securely transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any additional information not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. It is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug presence in most samples, but a positive outcome must be substantiated for legal proceedings. Samples that are initially flagged positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as preliminarily positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis one of the most labor-intensive methods.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screening results is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation. The entire laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use history for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a brief detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a trend of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variances can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often dubbed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
