At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hawk Inlet, Alaska. Need to get tested for drugs or alcohol? Our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we provide services across various cities Nationwide. The test requires hair ranging between 1.5 and 2 inches on your head or body, generally suffice. The analysis can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more popular for substance testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly opt for hair testing over urine testing. Hair tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation. Its key advantage is the extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, highly secure and nearly tamper-proof. However, urine testing remains the preferred method for substances consumed within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for detecting usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair embeds biomarkers from alcohol and drugs within the fibers of the growing hair strand, offering a prolonged history. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of up to about three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, fairly challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the best sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, specialized tests, and/or panel tests exceeding 10, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory processing of drug testing results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage in processing a sample in a lab's system. This covers checking that the sample is sealed and shipped accurately, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening offers a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that screen positive need secondary confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, more hair from the initial sample is used for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, illustrating why hair drug screening is complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire process is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect up to 90 days back of drug use, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows historical use: Provides insights into patterns of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not ideal for recent use: Drugs only appear in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out as a more robust method compared to urine tests, particularly in Hawk Inlet, AK. While traditional urine tests have been widely used, they are limited in terms of detection windows. Hair tests offer superior accuracy in identifying substance use, detecting drugs that urine tests may miss due to their shorter detection period. This makes hair tests a smarter choice for accurate drug use histories.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing in Hawk Inlet, AK is its extended detection window, which can go up to 90 days. This long period allows employers to get a comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug usage history. With such capacity, substance use trends can be monitored over an extended period, making it a reliable option for maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Hawk Inlet, AK are significantly tamper-resistant, providing results that are both reliable and less prone to manipulation. Urine tests can easily be tampered with, which compromises their integrity. In contrast, hair testing minimizes adulteration, offering a more trustworthy analysis, thus establishing it as the preferred choice among safety-conscious employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
