In the heart of Unga, Alaska, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Whether for drug or alcohol detection, they excel in hair assessments, boasting centers widespread across all U.S. cities. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body typically sufficient, these analyses can pinpoint drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specially tailored testing solutions.

The trend towards hair follicle testing for drug analysis has notably surged in recent times. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now often prefer these tests over traditional urine analyses. The standout advantage of hair tests is their ability to trace drug use for up to 90 days with almost unbreachable observational sample collection. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective instrument in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand trap biomarkers, giving a prolonged retrospective view of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can deliver an approximate 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine the specimen's weight. Should scalp hair be lacking, an equivalent portion of body hair may be harvested. The term head hair strictly indicates scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other types like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's preliminary processing into the lab’s protocol. It verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, issues a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any absent data entry if not previously supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substance misuse. Despite being a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires verification to be legally valid. All presumptively positive samples in this phase need further substantiation.

For samples testing presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methods to conduct.

Any positive result from screening undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests have a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, which makes outcomes more reliable.
  • Shows historical patterns: It offers insights into a timeline of drug consumption over extended periods, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection is limited: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand examined, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
