In Gleeson, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need a drug or alcohol detection test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and our expansive network of centers across all cities Nationwide enables us to provide testing anywhere. Typically, hair samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of growth, either from the crown of the head or other body hair. Our tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized analysis.

Hair follicle drug tests are gaining traction as a preferred method for substance detection. Increasingly chosen over urine tests, they are requested by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals alike. The advantages of hair testing include extended detection windows—up to 90 days—and an observed collection process that minimizes chance of tampering, making them ideal for zero-tolerance environments. Nevertheless, urine tests remain best for identifying recent drug use, within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug interactions by preserving biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for initial and confirmatory analysis. For EtG, supplemental, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the amount on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent mass of body hair might be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's entry into the laboratory system. This process checks that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to discount drug use in most cases, any positive screenings must be validated for court purposes. Samples determined to be presumptively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

When a sample is presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the preliminary sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, substances are withdrawn from hair, typically at lesser concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing among the most complicated methods to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory method from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited timeframe for detection.
  • Low likelihood of tampering: It's extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reports historical usage: It offers a usage pattern over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug screening techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While frequently known as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
