Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in St. David, Arizona. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we excel in hair testing, offering centers across Nationwide cities for conducting tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is suitable. Hair testing can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

The trend in drug screenings has increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many businesses, judicial authorities, and substance use experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by firms with stringent no-drug policies and are used by the courts and probation entities. Hair testing's fundamental advantage is its extended detection range for drug consumption, generally covering up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is nearly foolproof. Conversely, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding markers within the hair's structure as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can offer an approximate three-month period for detecting substances. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for tests and verifications. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, only scalp hair is considered. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adds any extra data not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient measure to eliminate drug usage for many samples, a positive finding needs validation to be legally valid. Samples that test positive in Screening require an additional confirmation phase.

For samples that show a likely positive result in Screening, further hair is taken from the original sample and set up for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other tests (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging procedure.

Confirmation for any positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical usage information: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, besides just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand examined, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
