In Golden Valley, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in this area is unmatched, and we have centers across the country capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary and can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or additional specific testing options.

Over the past few years, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent for drug testing purposes. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over urine tests. It's widely used where strict no-drug policies are enforced by employers, the court system, or for those on probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection duration, usually up to 90 days, with a strict collection process and little room for tampering. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair strands reveal a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair’s growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of lab analysis for a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data entry that an electronic chain of custody system hasn’t covered.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be verified to hold up in legal settings. Any samples yielding presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is utilized for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening finding is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary prior to confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating in a hair drug test is quite difficult, thereby ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Provides a historical overview: It reflects a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug screening techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
