Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Grand Canyon Village, Arizona. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialists at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body can be used in most instances. Hair tests can inspect for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method for drug testing. They are now favored by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation. A significant advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug usage for up to 90 days, with a meticulous and observed collection process, making them largely cheat-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective medium for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands offer an extended history of substance exposure by encasing biomarkers within their growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send for testing.

A 1.5-inch portion from roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any required data entry not provided through an electronic custody chain.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although it’s a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screening outcome must be verified to be legally valid. Any samples that indicate a preliminary positive result in Screening necessitate further validation.

If a sample shows a positive result at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is regarded as the most intricate testing technique.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is completed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are washed prior to the confirmation phase when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a limited detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug testing is highly resistant to falsification, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Grand Canyon Village, AZ

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers a higher degree of accuracy and reliability. In Grand Canyon Village, AZ, this method is preferred for its superior detection capabilities. The extended detection window of hair testing provides a more detailed view of substance use over time, making it a more effective option than urine tests.

Hair follicle tests are almost impossible to cheat, as they require a sample collected under direct supervision. This reduces the likelihood of tampering, ensuring the integrity of the results. With urine tests, the risk of adulteration or substitution remains high, making hair testing a more dependable choice.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Grand Canyon Village, AZ

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection period of up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history. This extended window enables employers in Grand Canyon Village, AZ to gain a deeper understanding of an applicant or employee's drug habits, which aids in making informed hiring or retention decisions.

The ability to detect substances over a longer period allows employers to identify consistent patterns of use, rather than isolated incidents. This increased insight fosters a safer and more responsible workplace, ensuring that substance use does not compromise productivity or safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Grand Canyon Village, AZ

One of the greatest strengths of hair follicle tests is their resistance to tampering. In Grand Canyon Village, AZ, this testing method is prized for its ability to effectively eliminate sample adulteration risks, ensuring untainted results. The observable collection process enhances the reliability of the test by confirming the authenticity of the sample.

In contrast to other drug testing methods, such as urine tests, where substitution or adulteration is common, hair follicle tests offer a robust alternative. The nature of the sample itself resists manipulation, offering a level of security and trust that other methods often lack.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
