Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Grand Canyon, Arizona. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair testing means we have facilities throughout the nation to conduct these exams. Generally, about 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair analysis is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method over traditional techniques. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. These tests are useful for zero-tolerance employers, legal courts, and individuals on probation, offering a broader detection window, typically around 90 days, with an observed collection process that is very difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting substance intake within the past 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. The strands of hair encapsulate biomarkers within their evolving fibers, providing a comprehensive historical perspective on alcohol and drugs. Hair, when sampled close to the scalp, can show substance use over about a three-month timeframe. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If the scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab's system by ensuring the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entries that aren't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary analysis for identifying drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective means of eliminating drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screening requires further confirmation to be eligible in legal settings. Samples that appear positive during screening must undergo secondary verification.

If Screening shows a presumptive positive result, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, which makes hair analysis one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes assessment according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use over 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Hair tests reveal prolonged usage patterns instead of just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair coloration and personal hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as “hair follicle tests,” the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
