Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Gray Mountain, Arizona. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert, with testing centers nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body hair can be utilized. Hair tests are suitable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals. Its advantage is a longer detection period for drug use, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, urine tests remain the best for detecting drug use in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within its evolving strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period extending up to approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for evaluating a drug test encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the laboratory's framework through initial processing steps. This phase ensures the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening effectively rules out drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be validated to be permissible in legal settings. Samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a sample is likely positive, more hair is extracted from the initial collection for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drug compounds are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is a challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation consistent with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection of urine tests.
  • Resistance to falsification: Due to the difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test, results are more dependable.
  • Chronological data provision: Such tests reveal drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
