Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Moenkopi, Arizona. Whether you require an alcohol or drug hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain, with facilities in every major city to serve your needs. Adequate hair length required is 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer additional tailored options.

Recently, the popularity of hair follicle testing as a drug detection method has surged. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts have shifted from conventional urine testing to this method. Ideal for entities enforcing strict drug-free policies, hair tests extend detection capabilities up to 90 days vs standard urine's 5-day window, are collected under observation, and thwart cheating attempts.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as an extended record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month period for the detection of alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the laboratory involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result from screening must be validated to be considered acceptable in court. Any samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a substantially lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is a reason why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo a washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Displays historical use: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing strategies.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Moenkopi, AZ, hair follicle testing provides distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. With a more extended detection period and improved reliability, hair tests offer a clearer view of an individual's substance use. Urine tests, limited to a short detection window, fall short in providing the comprehensive accuracy hair testing can offer, making them a less effective option for long-term analysis.

Extended Detection Window

In Moenkopi, AZ, hair follicle testing stands out for its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This advantage grants employers a thorough inspection of both applicants and employees' substance histories. A lengthy detection period ensures a broader understanding of potential drug use trends, offering stakeholders improved decision-making resources for maintaining a drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the key benefits of hair follicle testing in Moenkopi, AZ, is its tamper-resistant nature. The collection process minimizes opportunities for sample manipulation, ensuring that results are accurate and uncontaminated. By reducing the risk of adulteration, hair tests provide reliable insights into an individual's drug-use patterns, thus forming a trustworthy basis for critical decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
