Located in Piedra, AZ, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialty in hair testing ensures access to centers across all cities Nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, hair from the crown or body (1.5 to 2 inches) is required. Hair tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards the hair follicle method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This is especially true for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies. Hair tests are preferred due to their extended 90-day detection period, collected in a supervised manner, and resistance to manipulation. For screening within the last 5 days, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means to detect drugs and alcohol. The hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, providing a lasting record of drug or alcohol use. When a sample is taken near the scalp, it can yield a detection window for alcohol and drugs stretching up to approximately 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, comprising roughly 200 strands making up the diameter of a #2 pencil, located close to the scalp generates 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair may be used. “Head hair” specifically refers to scalp hair. “Body hair” covers other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning embodies the preliminary processing phase of integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system, confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) at random, and completing any data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result demands confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening will require additional confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drug extraction occurs at a much lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology to implement.

The Confirmation of any positive screen is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positives are washed appropriately before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on hair drug tests is extremely difficult, thus the results are more reliable.
  • Delivers historical insights: It highlights drug use patterns over a duration, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't pinpoint recent drug use: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can sway drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
