Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Summit, Arizona. For individuals requiring drug or alcohol assessments via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair analysis, boasting centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting these examinations. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of your head or body is acceptable. Options include testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored analysis.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors now prefer this over traditional urine testing. This test is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and those on probation. The significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, diagnosing drug use up to 90 days prior, with a supervised collection method making deception nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting drug use within the immediately preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable approach for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of nearly three months for alcohol and narcotics. It's easy to collect hair samples, they are relatively tough to tamper with, and straightforward to deliver.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches comprised of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. By scalp hair, we mean head hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial assimilation of a sample into a lab’s database. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as an initial swift evaluation for substances. Although Screening is an economic means to eliminate drug usage in most examples, a positive screen necessitates validation to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples that are presumptively positive from Screening demand further confirmation.

If a sample is assumed positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a more diluted concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to carry out.

Validation of any positive Screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples believed positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify substance use for up to 90 days, compared to urine evaluations which offer a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating the results of a hair drug examination is very challenging, thus enhancing its accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can demonstrate a timeline of substance use over time, not just latest usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It typically takes between 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are usually pricier compared to other substance testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: External factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
