Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Theba, Arizona. When you require hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels at this service, with locations available in every city across the nation capable of performing a hair test. To use, one must typically have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head, though body hair can also be utilized. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are now favoring hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation employ hair follicle drug tests. The chief advantage of a hair test is its longer drug detection span, which can be up to 90 days, with observed collection making it nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain the most accurate method for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, is somewhat tamper-proof, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This entails checking that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screens must be validated to be legally permissible. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the primary sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at a substantially lower concentration than is typical with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex technique to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screen result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect usage of drugs for a duration of up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to tamper with, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers trend analysis: Offers insight into a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days before they are observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing strategies.
  • Variable results: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually performed on the hair strand and not on the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
