Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Ashdown, Arkansas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing provides hair tests and operates testing centers in various cities nationwide capable of conducting hair analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is necessary. Hair samples can be scrutinized for drugs, alcohol/ETG or other personalized hair test options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has increasingly embraced hair follicle drug testing. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine screenings. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those under probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended drug detection window—up to 90 days—collected in a monitored process, making it highly cheat-resistant. For drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair holds a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the threads of the expanding hair shaft. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer a detection scope of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to gauge the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, the same quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result entail Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves receiving a sample into the lab's system. It includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial check for drugs of abuse. Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, but a positive result needs verification for legal admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive from Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect more recent use.
  • Hard to deceive: It’s highly challenging to trick a hair drug test, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insights: It enables tracking of drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
