Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Banner, Arkansas. Specializing in hair testing, we provide services in numerous locations across the nation for both drug and alcohol tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our tests can be tailored to detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or other specific substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over the years. A range of authorities and professionals now prefer this method over the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and probationers commonly use it. The key advantage is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, through a supervised process that is challenging to manipulate. For recent drug use within 5 days, however, urine tests still provide superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains an extended record of alcohol and drugs by binding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. If taken near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and authentication. For tests like EtG, supplementary panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advisable for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When talking about head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing within a lab's system. This step includes validating the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing in the electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a significantly shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, making their results more dependable.
  • Delivers historical insight: Hair testing reveals patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rate can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing in Banner, AR offers superior detection accuracy. Hair tests can identify drug usage over an extended period, whereas urine tests are limited to a short recent use window. This makes hair testing more reliable, reflecting a comprehensive history of substance use.

With urine tests, the detection time is significantly shorter. Hair testing offers a broader timeline, capturing a wider scope of drug use history. This expanded detection window provides employers and authorities better insights into an individual's substance use patterns.

Extended Detection Window

In Banner, AR, hair follicle drug testing boasts an extended detection window. This capability allows for detecting drug use for up to 90 days, offering employers a detailed view of a person's substance history. Such comprehensive detection is unmatched by other testing methods.

The long detection period is invaluable, as it sheds light on prolonged drug habits. Consequently, it aids employers in making informed recruitment decisions, ensuring a safer workplace environment by understanding an individual's substance involvement over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Banner, AR present a tamper-resistant option, reducing sample adulteration risks. This method ensures reliable and indisputable results, making it difficult for individuals to manipulate outcomes, unlike traditional urine tests.

These tests' integrity contributes to their trustworthiness. The mechanical and biological characteristics of hair samples safeguard against tampering, securing valid results that reflect true substance intake. This reliability is critical for enforcement and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
