In Marshall, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing. With our expertise in hair testing and a network of centers nationwide, you can easily access a hair drug or alcohol test. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required, and body hair may also be used. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized based on specific needs.

More recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation scenarios, hair follicle tests offer a longer detection span of up to 90 days, feature observed collections, and are notoriously hard to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a vital means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It offers a prolonged timeline of substance intake by trapping biomarkers within the hair's fibers. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, the same amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing within the lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although it is cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This stage removes drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to perform.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening result. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and validated against ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Variations in results: Differences such as hair color and personal growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
