Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Beaver, Arkansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, supported by testing centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are used for testing. Our analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer this over standard urine tests. This method is favored by employers adhering to zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs. Hair follicle testing offers a significant advantage with its detection period covering up to 90 days. The observed collection process enhances accuracy and reduces cheating, although urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use events within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair Drug Testing

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can present roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a drug test outcome within a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a quick preliminary check for substance abuse. Despite being a budget-friendly method to eliminate substance usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for judicial acceptance. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require further verification.

For samples considered presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is used from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing complex to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to falsify: Manipulating results in a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of substance use, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Substances become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth dynamics can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
