Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Birta, Arkansas. Our expertise in hair testing is available nationwide with local centers ready to conduct these tests. For a valid sample, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is typically required. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other needs.

The trend for drug testing has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle testing over recent years. It's a preferred choice for many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over standard urine testing. Organizations with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation programs favor hair testing for its prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring a thorough and cheat-proof evaluation. However, for recent drug use, particularly within 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period up to roughly three months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a standard #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields about 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels beyond ten, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary and swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent verification.

For samples with presumptive positives identified during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is used in Extraction. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a lower concentration compared to other testing methods (for instance, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenges in cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is notoriously difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Patterns of historical data: It illustrates a timeline of drug use, rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Birta, AR, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in various aspects. Its superior accuracy makes it a preferred choice for identifying long-term substance use, providing a detection window that extends well beyond the limitations of urine testing.

While urine tests are apt for recent drug detection, hair follicle tests offer unmatched reliability and effectiveness for discerning drug use patterns over several months, making them ideal for comprehensive screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Birta, AR offers an extended detection period, capturing drug usage up to 90 days. This gives employers a thorough insight into an individual's substance history, aiding in more informed hiring and monitoring processes.

With this expansive detection window, hair tests provide a holistic view of long-term substance use, crucial for employers adhering to stringent zero-tolerance drug policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
