Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chickalah, Arkansas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, and we have facilities across all cities Nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, though body hair may also be used. Hair tests can detect drug and alcohol use, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has increasingly become the norm in recent years. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are valuable tools for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation. The extended detection window of up to 90 days, combined with an observed collection process, makes these tests nearly impossible to cheat. Yet, urine tests remain accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly regarded as a potent method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to around a three-month window for identifying drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the most suitable amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should head hair be inaccessible, the same amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This involves checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening is a preliminary swift examination for drugs of misuse. Though Screening is an economical way to exclude drug consumption on most samples, a positive screen must be verified to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample comes up presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening the most challenging method to carry out.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably hard to dodge a hair drug test, increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reflect a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to catch recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Costliness: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variation in outcomes: Elements including hair color and individual growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
