In Evening Shade, Arkansas, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing. If a hair or alcohol drug test is necessary, we specialize in such procedures and provide services in Nationwide centers, available in all cities. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent than before. Hair drug tests are increasingly preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. This testing is key for employers with strict no-drug policies, utilized by courts and probationers. Its main advantage is a much longer drug detection period—typically up to 90 days—gathered through an observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to cheat. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, it offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use. Hair, when cut near the scalp, can reveal drug and alcohol intake over the past three months. It's easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces a 100mg sample, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of head hair, a similar amount of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the procedure of entering a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most cases, any positive results need confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

When a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are pulled from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive results from screening are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides usage history: It delivers a timeline of drug usage over multiple months, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually done on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
