Located in Highland, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether you're pursuing a hair or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair tests, and we've got centers nationwide, ready to facilitate such examinations. Ideally, you should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either your head or body. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other hair testing needs.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests has seen increased popularity over urine tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists lean towards hair drug analyses. Hair tests support zero-tolerance drug policies favored by employers, judicial systems, and probationary checks. They offer a significant detection timeline—up to 90 days. Additionally, they feature supervised collection, making them difficult to compromise. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is regarded as an effective resource for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage up to about a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, this refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in lab processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial analysis of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary brisk examination for abusive drugs. While Screening is a financially viable method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated for legal acceptability. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are sourced from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other techniques like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a short detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, making results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides an overview of drug usage over a duration, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs need about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
