Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facility locations nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, hair from the crown of your head, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required, and, if necessary, body hair may also be utilized. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing services.

In the evolving landscape of drug testing, the hair follicle method has gained prominence. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests are crucial for organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals under probation. They have an extended detection window of up to 90 days. Although this is an observed procedure ensuring accuracy and integrity, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent consumption within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized for its effectiveness in revealing drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extensive history of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can showcase a detection period for alcohol and drugs lasting up to roughly three months. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches from roughly 200 strands of hair (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analysis beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the basic processing of a sample within a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry that is not part of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for identifying drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs validation to be legally acceptable. Samples that are presumably positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample emerges as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lower concentration than seen in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, which enhances the test accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Perceiving drugs in hair typically takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly compared to alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
