Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fargo, Arkansas. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, our company is an expert in hair testing, and we have testing sites in every major city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become an increasingly popular method for drug screening. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now request hair drug testing instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation programs. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring a nearly foolproof collection process. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for these substances. Hair sampling is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

For optimal screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair. For tests like EtG add-ons and panels above 10, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning step involves the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab’s system, verifying sample integrity during sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data entry absent from electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening is a preliminary, efficient method to check for drug abuse. Although cost-effective to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to hold up legally. Samples with presumptively positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is prepared for Extraction from the existing specimen. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used for confirming positive screening results. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: Displays a pattern of drug usage over time, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs become identifiable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: "Hair follicle tests" often describe tests that examine the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with urine tests in Fargo, AR, the advantages are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection rates and reliability, making it a top choice for those looking for a thorough inspection.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing eliminates the potential for false negatives due to its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, giving an in-depth overview of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

In Fargo, AR, hair follicle testing is preferred for its extended detection window. It can trace substance use back up to 90 days, providing employers with a broader understanding of an individual's drug use history.

This extended period is crucial for making informed hiring and monitoring decisions, ensuring that a complete picture of an employee or candidate's substance use is presented.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Fargo, AR, significantly minimizes the risk of sample tampering. This method provides reliable, indisputable results due to the difficulty in altering or contaminating the hair sample.

The robust nature of hair samples means they remain untampered, bringing trust and confidence in the test outcomes, unlike methods that are easier to compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
