Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fitzhugh, Arkansas. Whether it's for detecting drugs or alcohol, we are hair testing experts with facilities across the nation. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from your scalp or body is generally necessary. Our hair screenings are customizable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, there has been a growing preference for hair follicle drug assessments over traditional urine tests. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are turning to hair testing for its advantages. It's the go-to for those enforcing strict no-drug policies and overseeing probationary individuals. The key advantage lies in its 90-day detection window, using an observable collection, making it nearly infallible. Yet, for recent drug use, within the past five days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by preserving markers in the hair's evolving strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for examination and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the lab processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This comprises confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry unmet by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, but a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves withdrawing drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Tough to deceive: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical data: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot uncover recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Often mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
