In McCrory, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, we have specialized centers across all cities nationwide for hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customizable options.

The shift to hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers benefit greatly from the extended detection window of hair follicle tests, which can identify drug use for up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning details the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial swift evaluation for substances of misuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, positive results must be verified to be legally accepted. All samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a notably challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result during screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples marked presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the ability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Circumventing a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring higher accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
