At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug testing services right here in Harriet, Arkansas. If you're seeking a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol, look no further than our nationwide network of testing centers which specialize in hair analysis. To conduct a hair test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Our hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over other methods. Employers, legal systems, and substance professionals increasingly opt for hair tests rather than the traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored due to their extensive detection windows, observed sample collection leading to higher integrity, and resistance to tampering or cheating. Nonetheless, when assessing recent drug use (within five days), urine tests maintain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair incorporates a longitudinal record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers an estimated 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. It’s easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair—the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a lab-based drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the first phase of entering a specimen into a lab’s system. This entails making sure the sample was adequately sealed and delivered, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial brief assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to discount drug use in most specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

In instances where a sample yields a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the primary specimen to prep for Extraction. At this juncture, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underpinning the complexity of hair drug screening.

Verifying any positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive specimens are washed as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations ascertain drug use over an approximate 90-day span, contrasting with urine exams that possess a briefer detection duration.
  • Challenging to falsify: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test contributes to more precise results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It offers insights into the trajectory of substance use over time, not solely current use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variabilities: Influences such as hair pigment and individual hair growth variations may impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
