Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in McNab, Arkansas. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this type of testing and have facilities across the nation equipped to perform a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent times, the frequency of using hair follicle drug testing has increased. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation cases benefit from hair tests due to their extended drug detection period of usually up to 90 days. While urine tests prove reliable for recent use within five days, hair tests are difficult to manipulate due to supervised collections.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can disclose substance use for up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transporting is convenient.

A bundle measuring 1.5 inches in length, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s girth) near the scalp, will yield 100mg—the optimal amount for both preliminary screening and confirmatory analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. In our context, head hair denotes solely scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other varieties (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug test result process in the lab consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample first enters the lab’s system. This stage ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an expedited preliminary examination for substances of misuse. Though cost-effective for excluding drug use in most specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For any presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair from the sample is prepped for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs at lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair analysis the most challenging to perform.

Positive screens undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are thoroughly washed before confirmation if required. Both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation govern the entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine screenings offer a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, enhancing the reliability of outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: They illustrate substance use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to cost more compared to other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables, including hair color and personal hair growth patterns, can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed “hair follicle tests”, this analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp’s underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
