Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Old Lexington, Arkansas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair screening, with facilities across all national cities ready to conduct such tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is required. Hair tests encompass analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair test solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in conducting drug screenings. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. This test's chief advantage is its extensive detection period, lasting up to 90 days, being meticulously observed during collection, thus making it nearly impossible to falsify. Yet, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers into the strands' fibers as they grow. If collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal up to a 3-month timeline for alcohol and drug usage. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for screening and confirmation testing. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers only to scalp hair; "body hair" encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The drug test lab process is comprised of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering the sample into the lab’s system, checking that it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and inputting any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial scan for drugs of abuse to efficiently rule out usage. Although cost-effective, any positive screen requires confirmation for court acceptance. Thus, samples testing presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further Confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during Screening, extra hair is isolated from the original sample for Extraction. This step isolates drugs at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of conducting hair drug analysis.

Confirmation for any presumptive positive from Screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumptive positive samples are preemptively cleansed before Confirmation. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab process undergoes scrutiny under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug testing can discern drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: It's exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days post-use to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
