In Pea Ridge, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug examinations. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test, the company excels in hair testing, with facilities across numerous cities Nationwide ready to conduct tests. Ideally, the crown of your head or body hair measuring between 1.5 to 2 inches is needed for most tests, which can detect drug usage, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored examinations.

Lately, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analyses. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair tests over common urine analyses. These tests are preferred by firms adhering to strict drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair testing is its expanded detection timeline of up to 90 days, facilitated through an observed collection process, causing it to be incredibly difficult to manipulate when recent drug usage within five days demands more accuracy, urine tests lead.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within approximately a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches in length, consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or when exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the hair specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. It involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening facilitates an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for them to be legally viable in court. Hence, samples with presumptive positive results during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this step, drugs are isolated from the hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining why hair drug testing is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening findings is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo a washing procedure before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection interval: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a reduced detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug tests is extremely challenging, promoting greater accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a timeline of substance use over an extended duration, as opposed to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
