Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Poyen, Arkansas. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with testing facilities in cities across the Nation capable of conducting hair tests. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body for testing in most instances. Hair tests can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing options.

The approach to drug testing in recent years has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over the standard urine test. Zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probation services utilize hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, and is nearly foolproof. However, to detect recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strand's fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use for an estimated 3-month period. It’s easy to obtain, comparatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp is needed to yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For testing EtG, additional screenings, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise verifying the weight of the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Heads of hair refer exclusively to scalp strands. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in analyzing a drug sample in a lab setup include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab's workflow system. This process entails confirming proper sealing and dispatch, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other required data input not supplied by a digital custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an affordable method to exclude drug intake in most samples, any positive findings require verification for legal acceptability. All samples suspected positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a specimen appear positive at the Screening phase, extra hair is sourced from the primary sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels versus other techniques (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing notably complex to conduct.

Any affirmative screening outcome undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumed positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug assays can trace drug uptake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug analysis is challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Yields chronological data: Provides insight into drug patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis inspects the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
