Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Sheridan, Arkansas. When a hair drug or alcohol examination is needed, we excel in hair testing, with facilities available in all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is sufficient for a test. Our hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various bespoke testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle examinations. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals often choose this method. Hair follicle tests offer a significantly longer drug detection window—up to 90 days—and are collected under supervision, making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional items, and/or tests beyond ten panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are exclusively considering scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The four principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within the lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial quick assessment for substances. While it is a budget-friendly approach to exclude substance usage in most samples, a confirmed positive result is necessary to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that show a presumptive positive result during Screening must undergo a secondary validation.

In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for Processing. During this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug analysis is one of the most demanding methods to execute.

The validation of any positive screening results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation, as deemed necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: It's highly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers a usage pattern: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth could influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly described as "hair follicle tests," the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sheridan, AR, hair follicle testing has a clear edge over traditional urine tests. The heightened detection accuracy allows for more reliable results, crucial for those with stringent requirements. As employers uphold zero-tolerance policies, hair testing offers robust evidence and dependable outcomes, unlike the variability sometimes associated with urine testing.

The reliability of hair testing surpasses urine alternatives through its capacity to detect substances long after use, significantly expanding the accuracy window. Though urine tests remain prevalent for recent use, the consistency and comprehensive detection capabilities of hair tests make them superior in Sheridan, AR.

Extended Detection Window

With hair follicle testing in Sheridan, AR, drug detection spans up to 90 days, offering a valuable overview of an individual's substance history. This extensive detection period provides employers with a thorough understanding of potential hires or existing employees, far surpassing the limited timeframe of urine tests, which focus primarily on recent use.

Employers across Sheridan benefit from this prolonged detection capability, as it allows a comprehensive assessment of substance use over an extended duration. The longer window helps uncover habitual patterns, guiding informed decisions in maintaining a safe workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
