Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a specimen into a laboratory’s database. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lesser concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex procedure to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed for confirming any positive Screening results. Before undertaking confirmation, all samples that are presumptive positive are subjected to washing. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the comprehensive lab procedure is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
