Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Richmond, Arkansas. Specializing in these assessments, the company operates testing centers across all cities Nationwide, offering reliable hair or alcohol analysis. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Customized hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a common choice in recent years for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for this over traditional urine tests. With a detection window of 90 days, observed collection process, and higher resistance to tampering, hair testing is favored by zero-tolerance organizations. However, urine tests still reign as most accurate for very recent drug usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair provides up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting drug and alcohol use. It is easy to collect hair samples, they're harder to tamper with, and they ship conveniently.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. With head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system, which includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for most samples to rule out drug presence, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require a secondary verification.

For samples showing presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. At this point, substances are pulled from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a limited detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It's very challenging to evade a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical consumption data: Hair tests provide a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Around 5-7 days are required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
