Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Saint Francis, Arkansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing facilities nationwide that conduct hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug testing routines. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair over urine tests. Hair tests are favored by organizations adhering to zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary individuals. The key advantage is longer detection, up to 90 days, with observed collection, minimizing cheating. However, for recent drug use, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term records of alcohol and drug use due to biomarkers being trapped in the strands' fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of around 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be sourced. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of drug tests are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of sample processing into a lab’s system, which involves checking the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboral Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, court-admissible results from a positive screen must be confirmed. Samples presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing is effective for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage information: It offers a drug use pattern over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't identify recent use: Drug detectability in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher expenses than other drug test methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Typically called "hair follicle tests", this analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
