In Wynne, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Those requiring a hair or alcohol analysis can rely on their expertise, available across numerous testing locations throughout the nation. Clients typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for testing, applicable for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized analyses.

More frequently, drug screening includes hair follicle tests favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation prefer hair tests. Hair follicle testing's advantage lies in its extended 90-day detection period, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective instrument for identifying substance and alcohol consumption patterns. The hair captures a detailed history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month detection time frame for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, with low susceptibility to tampering, and is easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hairs (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional components, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a collection of 150mg is suggested. It is advised to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is suitable. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to any other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test outcome consists of four fundamental phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This step confirms that the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in the majority of cases, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legal acceptability. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

If a sample seems positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than with other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of any screening positive is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positives undergo pre-confirmation cleansing if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to circumvent: It is notably hard to evade a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers pattern data: Provides a history of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • No immediate use detection: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Disparities in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
