Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Schaal, Arkansas. If a test for hair or alcohol is needed, our expertise in hair testing makes us the ideal choice, with facilities throughout every city Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body suffice. Hair samples undergo analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. It's increasingly adopted by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favoring it over the regular urine tests. Employers maintaining strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation extol the test's benefits, notably its 90-day detection period and foolproof collection, although it is less effective for drug use within the past 5 days compared to urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a lasting record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair filament. When collected from near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to about three months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair alludes to any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in laboratory drug test analysis include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This covers verifying that the sample was securely sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entries not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for misuse of drugs. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a corroborative analysis is required for a positive screen to be valid in legal settings. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis a challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for a maximum of 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Avoiding a hair drug test is notably complex, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical context: It can display a drug use pattern over an extensive timeline, beyond just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become evident in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses typically incur higher costs than alternate drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and personal hair growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Schaal, AR, hair follicle testing is often favored over traditional urine tests due to several advantages. These tests provide a longer window of detection, retain accuracy, and are difficult to cheat. Employers particularly benefit from hair testing as it effectively detects historical drug use, ensuring a safe workplace and adherence to policies.

Hair follicle tests offer improved reliability in identifying substance use patterns. Unlike urine tests, hair samples capture long-term drug histories, making them invaluable for scrutinizing candidates or employees extensively. The enhanced accuracy makes this method superior when precise results are necessary.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window is a significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Schaal, AR. It provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use history spanning up to 90 days. This extended timeline is invaluable for employers who are concerned with ongoing substance issues among applicants or employees.

Unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period, hair follicle tests maintain an extended capability to uncover past drug use. This helps employers make informed decisions, as it highlights ongoing patterns rather than isolated incidents, offering a more holistic view of one's drug habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Schaal, AR, the integrity of drug test results is crucial, and hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant method. Hair samples are difficult to adulterate compared to urine samples, making results from hair testing more trustworthy and eliminating doubts regarding manipulation.

Hair follicle tests minimize the risk of sample tampering. In contrast to urine tests, whose preparation and collection are susceptible to deceitful practices, hair testing maintains stringent protocols to preserve authenticity, ensuring fully reliable findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
