Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Scranton, Arkansas. Our expertise extends to both drug and alcohol testing with specialized hair analysis available across Nationwide testing centers. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is usually needed from the head or body. The hair test covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing needs.

The hair follicle drug testing approach has gained traction for its effectiveness in recent years. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests uphold zero-tolerance policies and assist judicial processes. Offering up to a 90-day detection window, hair tests ensure observed, cheat-proof collections, though urine tests remain precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair assessments is increasingly recognized as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand, offering an extensive view of drug and alcohol history. When sourced near the scalp, hair potentially yields a detection period of approximately 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, with minimal chances of tampering, and is conveniently shippable.

A collected 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the prime sample for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests extending beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh this on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair is obtainable. Mentioning head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The pivotal procedures in lab processing of drug test results encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a specimen into a lab’s framework. This stage includes validating proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing auxiliary data input not captured by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening stands for an initial swift analysis for drug misuse. Even though Screening serves as an economical method for dismissing drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates verification to hold up in court. Samples presuming positivity during Screening unavoidably warrant further confirmation.

Should a sample display a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at inferior concentrations than other practices (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity and precision required in hair drug screening.

Confirming a positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. Comprehensive laboratory processes from Accessioning to Confirmation are audited in line with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests recognize drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that display a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Challenge in evasion: It is notably challenging to evade a hair drug test, reinforcing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage trends: It elucidates a frequency of drug use spanning a timeline, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent consumption: Drugs typically manifest in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally involve higher costs than alternate testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair pigmentation and distinct growth patterns may influence metabolite concentration in hair strands.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
