Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Steprock, Arkansas. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is required, their expertise in hair testing is evident, with centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices for drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair analyses.

Over recent years, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers enforcing strict drug-use policies, courts, and probationers often use hair testing. Its main benefit is an extended drug detection span, up to 90 days, with observed collection that resists tampering. However, urine tests remain most accurate for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as a robust instrument for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair fiber. When acquired near the scalp, hair can supply up to about a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is uncomplicated to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (about equal to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional assays, and/or assessments surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug testing result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample processing into a laboratory system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data entry not given by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid examination for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening do necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample records presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the original specimen and organized for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical specifics: It can provide a pattern of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, not solely recent usage.

Disadvantages:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings generally incur higher costs compared to other drug inspection methods.
  • Fluctuations in findings: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth might impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the testing itself examines the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Steprock, AR: In Steprock, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing are clear. Hair tests provide more reliable detection accuracy and an extended window for identifying substance use. While traditional urine tests might only indicate recent use, hair testing uncovers historical patterns of drug intake, spanning up to 90 days. This means employers gain a thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use history.

Urine tests might capture recent drug use, but they lack the extended detection period provided by hair follicle tests. In Steprock, AR, this results in a more comprehensive view of substance use, reducing the risk of missing long-term patterns. Employers stand confident knowing their assessment tools provide detailed insights beyond immediate use.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Steprock, AR: Hair follicle testing in Steprock offers an unparalleled detection window of up to 90 days. This extensive coverage allows employers to gain a clear picture of a candidate or employee's substance history over several months, rather than limiting insights to recent use alone. Such comprehensive evaluation proves invaluable for workplaces targeting long-term abstinence.

With hair follicle testing, the extended window provides a clear advantage in assessing adherence to drug-free policies. By capturing data over longer periods, employers in Steprock can better ensure their staff complies with workplace standards, thus enhancing productivity and fostering a safer work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
