Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug assessments in Waltreak, Arkansas. Should you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair examinations. We operate testing centers nationwide that can efficiently conduct these tests. You will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown or elsewhere on your body to proceed with most cases. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing advancements have increasingly favored a hair follicle approach. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair analyses over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and parolees are adopting hair follicle tests. Their chief advantage is an extended drug detection window, normally covering up to 90 days, all within a monitored collection process, making it nearly impossible to falsify results. Nonetheless, for drug use detection in the recent 5 days, urine tests still provide the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When cut near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch lock of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for diagnosis and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair signify scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary procedures involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary entry of a sample into a lab’s framework. This encompasses confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a swift initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be viable in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower density than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Validation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in comparison to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty in deception: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It can exhibit a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often named "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
