Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Warren, Arkansas. Whether you need testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with centers available across the country for hair testing. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your scalp or body suffices. Hair testing can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. These are now preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers and probationary services for their extended detection period, up to 90 days. They are conducted under observation and are difficult to circumvent. However, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests still offer superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has been recognized as an effective method for detecting drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over roughly a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and conveniently shippable.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used. When we refer to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of determining drug test outcomes comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although this is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those used in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating in hair drug tests is quite challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Gives historical perspective: It reveals a pattern of drug use over some time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
