Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in La Palma, California. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing centers located in all cities across the USA that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can analyze drugs and alcohol/ETG among other tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly involved the hair follicle drug test. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer a hair drug test rather than the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are employed by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals under supervision. A key advantage of these tests is their extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, with results collected via an observed process, making them almost foolproof. However, for recent 5-day drug use detection, the urine test remains the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective instrument for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hairs (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. Note, when referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first processed into the lab’s systems. It includes confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, positive findings need confirmation before they are considered court-admissible. Samples showing a presumptive positive result during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other testing methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as needed. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a much shorter detection bracket.
  • Challenge to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern over time of drug use, unlike methods that only identify recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Compared to other methods, hair drug testing tends to be more costly.
  • Result variation: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While typically referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in La Palma, CA, hair testing emerges superior due to its unmatched detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests can uncover months of drug usage, offering a more detailed understanding. Employers and individuals alike benefit from the consistency and dependability that hair testing provides over urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
