Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

In Lebec, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug evaluations. Our expert services include hair and alcohol testing across numerous nationwide sites, ensuring accessibility. Clients need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. Options include screening for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing kits.

Recently, drug-testing methodologies have increasingly employed hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer them over urine tests. Courts and zero-tolerance companies commonly use these tests. They offer a detection window up to 90 days, involve direct supervision during collection, and are nearly cheat-proof. For detection within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is highly regarded for detecting substance and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is scarce, a comparable volume of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical phases in laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample into the lab’s procedures. This step ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug materials. Though Screening is an economical strategy to exclude drug consumption in most specimens, a positive outcome requires Confirmation to be substantiated in legal contexts. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further Confirmation.

In instances of presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower levels than alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any potentially positive results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed accordingly. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, encompassing Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Detection integrity: The difficulty in manipulating a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: It allows for insight into drug patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent intake detection: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: Commonly mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
