Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Los Altos Hills, California. Whether seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with facilities across numerous cities for conducting hair tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffice. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or have other tailored testing selections.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained prominence in drug testing protocols. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now choose hair over traditional urine testing. Such tests serve zero-tolerance workplaces, legal entities, and individuals under supervision. The main advantage lies in detecting drug use over about 90 days, ensuring a monitored collection process, and being almost infallible against tampering. However, for immediate five-day detection, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. The fibers of a growing hair strand trap biomarkers, offering a long-term overview of alcohol and drug history. Hair samples collected near the scalp can reflect a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg, a perfect quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system, which includes ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry if needed beyond an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a quick preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, screening positives require confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Any samples with presumptive positive results in screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples from the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the first specimen for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid; hence, hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: They can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Drugs usually become discernible in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth rate can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand instead of the scalp's hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Los Altos Hills, CA? Because of its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing surpasses the limitations of urine analysis, identifying a wider range of substances with unmatched precision. This method is not only more comprehensive but also offers a longer detection window, ensuring a thorough insight into an individual's drug use history.

Urine tests may be common, but hair tests offer detection that's difficult to beat. Their precision makes hair tests a reliable option for discerning drug use over an extended period. Employers and courts, in particular, find the accuracy of hair testing beneficial in upholding stringent drug-free policies and ensuring compliance with standards.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a game-changer in Los Altos Hills, CA. Unlike other methods, it offers a remarkable ability to trace drug use over an impressive 90-day span. This characteristic provides employers with a full-spectrum understanding of a potential hire's substance history, critical for informed decision-making.

Having a panoramic view of drug use is crucial for companies, and hair follicle testing delivers just that. Its long detection window means employers can spot patterns of substance use that might otherwise be missed. This all-encompassing approach ensures that no detail is overlooked, leading to safer, more compliant workplaces.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Los Altos Hills, CA, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests sets them apart. These tests significantly mitigate the risk of sample adulteration, offering results that are reliable and unquestionable. Their resistance to tampering ensures that the integrity of the testing process is maintained, providing peace of mind to employers and authorities alike.

Maintaining the authenticity of test results is crucial, and hair follicle testing excels in this aspect. The difficulty in altering hair samples means that the results reflect accurate substance use histories. This uncompromised reliability is indispensable for organizations aiming to uphold strict drug-free policies and ensure workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
