Based in Norwalk, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, look no further. We are experts in hair assessments and provide services across numerous cities nationwide. You'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp, or body hair can be an alternative. Hair tests are customizable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has surged in popularity recently for screening. Courts, employers, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the usual urine assays. These tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies and courts managing probation. Hair follicle tests offer extensive detection, up to 90 days, through close observation, making them hard to deceive. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still hold the edge.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month analysis period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, and/or beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample is appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substances of misuse. Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, but a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples with a presumptive positive outcome in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. At this point, substances are removed from the hair at a much lower concentration than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the greatest methodological challenge.

Verification of any screening-positive result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical data: It provides a record of drug usage over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables like hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
