Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Santa Ana, California. For those needing a hair or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing with centers in all cities nationwide. Typically, individuals require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. Hair analyses can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer various customized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are shifting towards hair tests over standard urine tests. Corporate entities with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers favor hair tests. This method provides a detection window up to 90 days, using an observed collection method, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the previous 5 days, urine tests still remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a substantial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reflect up to a nearly 3-month period of drug and alcohol detection. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in circumference to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to determine the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory system. This process includes ensuring that the sample has been properly sealed and transported, assigning an anonymous LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any pertinent information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a swift preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive screening must be substantiated for legal acceptability. Samples returning a presumptive positive result from Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is withdrawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It enables a record of drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Results variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine testing in Santa Ana, CA? Superior detection accuracy is a clear advantage, providing a more reliable snapshot of substance history. Compared to traditional urine tests, hair testing identifies long-term drug use, giving a clearer perspective. Extended Detection Window

The remarkable attribute of hair follicle testing in Santa Ana, CA, is its extended detection window. While urine tests fall short, hair tests can trace substances up to 90 days back, offering a comprehensive view of one's drug use history. This feature proves invaluable for employers wanting insight into long-term habits, making decisions more informed and strategic regarding potential hires or current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
