Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chacra, Colorado. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, supported by nationwide centers equipped for this process. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. Our hair tests accommodate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing trends have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for these over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is the choice for entities with strict drug-free policies. Its key advantage is the extended detection window, often up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it extremely difficult to falsify. Yet, urine tests still excel for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to around three months. It is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp's proximity, provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to check the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Referencing head hair pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair denotes other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to initially processing a sample into the lab's records. This process verifies that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary test for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary validation.

If a sample is identified as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Validation of any positive screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Reduced chances of tampering: It's challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability of identifying recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments often incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Chacra, CO, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair tests provide a broader window for identifying substance use, offering greater accuracy and reliability. Comparatively, urine tests have a limited detection span, making hair testing the more effective choice for comprehensive substance analysis.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Chacra, CO benefit from hair follicle testing's extended detection window, which can span up to 90 days. This longer period allows a deeper insight into an individual's drug use history, far exceeding the restricted timeframe of urine testing, and facilitating more informed employment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
